Lessons Learned from a Field Trip

So, yesterday I took the kids to the American Museum of Natural History.  I wanted them to explore the "Life at the Limits" exhibit.  I wanted the students to learn something but I also wanted them to be able to hang out with their classmates and have a good time.  So, I did not require that they use a pencil and paper to take notes or answer questions.  Instead I informed them on the bus of their assignment.

1. They were to go to the "Life at the Limits" exhibit.  They were to note three animals.  Describe the environments that they lived in.  Finally, they were to figure out the adaptations that the animals had to survive in their habitat.

Today I asked them to write down their answers to this questions.

What did I learn.

1. The students didn't know what an adaptation was.
2. The students didn't realize they needed to read about the animals in the exhibit.
3. We need to teach the students how to use the museum as a resource.
